Health data is often scattered across systems that cannot easily exchange information. Interoperability is the work of connecting them so data can flow where it is needed.
Standards come first
Shared standards give systems a common language. Standards like HL7 FHIR describe health data as resources, such as a Patient:
{
"resourceType": "Patient",
"id": "example",
"gender": "female",
"birthDate": "1990-01-01"
}What good looks like
- Systems exchange data without manual re-entry
- Records can be matched reliably across systems
- New integrations reuse existing standards instead of custom work
The goal is simple: a health worker should be able to rely on complete, current information without caring which system it came from.
